_____Cinco de Mayo. While to many of us, this means an excuse to drink as many margaritas as physically possible, in the nearby neighborhood of Pilsen, residents consider this holiday a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride that commemorates the cause of freedom and democracy in the US and in Mexico.
While Pilsen continuously becomes more diversified, currently the Lower West Side neighborhood is approximately 86% hispanic. Learn more about your city and your neighbors on this Pilsen Cultural Tour & Fiesta, and discover how the heart of Chicago’s Mexican American community came to be. This evening will kickoff with a one-hour cultural walking tour through the heart of Pilsen's commerce district beginning at 6:00 PM. Starting at 18th and Paulina (directly at the 18th street Pink line stop), we'll weave through the neighborhood stopping at major sights and hearing historical tidbits from an expert guide from The Resurrection Project, a local organization committed to Pilsen community development. See St. Vitus church, La Casa, gorgeous murals, and much, much more on this private tour. After we work up an appetite walking through the neighborhood, we'll find ourselves at the doorstep of Cuernavaca, dubbed by Metromix as the "most authentic and well decorated Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood of Pilsen". We'll feast on a buffet of chicken tacos, beef tostadas, cheese enchiladas, rice and beans, chips and guacamole, and more (veggie options available)! Everyone will also enjoy either a margarita or choice of Mexican beer, plus delicious bunuelos for dessert. When the neighborhood starts quieting down, our fiesta will just be heating up. A private bus will pick us up at approximately 8:30 PM and drop us off at a Dos Diablos - a more "contemporary" spot that mixes Mexican culture with River North flare. Enjoy exclusive CitySwarm specials like $5 margaritas and $20 buckets of Corona. While you still have the option to drink as many margaritas as physically possible, you can also hop on a nearby el and ride home with a new-found appreciation of Chicago's diverse cultures. |
