Beyond just the unimaginable amount of day drinking opportunities, what's truly amazing about Chicago in the summer is that it becomes a full-fledged harbor town. Buoys bob in the water, seagulls fly overhead, and the mysterious smell of salt water wafts through the air (even though Lake Michigan is a fresh water lake....weird).
Instead of being a land lubber all summer, hop aboard with CitySwarm as we sit back, relax, and set sail on the glorious lake while watching the sun set over our amazing skyline. It's Sail & Ale Time! Chicago Sailing, open since 1987, is the largest single slip holder in Chicago and will be our partner for this awesome event! Chicago Sailing has 22 boats in their fleet and employs staff from all around the world- 7 different countries in total! At 6:15 PM, CitySwarmers will meet at Belmont Harbor ready to set sail on sleek J22's. Each boat holds four guests, so either come with your own shipmates, or we'll group you together with some new ones! Each boat will also have a Coast Guard-licensed captain who will teach you the basics of sailing, and then lead you through the waves on a 1.5 hour cruise as you're learning to sail for yourself. We'll provide an on-board snack to tide you over until shore; you'll need energy for all that jibing. As the wind dies down but your stomach just begins to growl, we'll dock back at the Harbor where a lakeside picnic awaits. As all sailors should, we'll slice the mainbrace on land but switch out the rum and enjoy two icy-cold Coors Lights. And as for food, we're not talking ship's biscuits...we're talking a full catered meal by the masters of local BBQ, Smoke Daddy. "The Daddy" is frequently seen on Food Network shows like The Bobby Flay Show and Rachel Ray's Tasty Travels, and it's been rated "best barbecue in Chicago" by several local media outlets. You'll enjoy a sandwich (choice of pulled pork or pulled chicken, smoked daily in the "Lil Red Smoker" - veggie option available as well) plus homemade mac & cheese and cole slaw - this ain't your grandma's picnic! Weather policy: In the case of severe weather, a Chicago Sailing staff member will make any cancellation determinations by the scheduled start time of the event and guests will be notified via email. In the case of a cancellation, a full refund will be provided.
